Colleen Sparks, founder and owner of The Communication Connector, L.L.C., is a 20-year journalist who worked for several years as a full-time reporter at The Arizona Republic, the state’s largest daily newspaper. She also worked for more than five years as a reporter/editor for a national news service owned by iHeartMedia, writing stories for radio stations around the country.
Sparks began her diverse career at The County Press, a community newspaper in Lapeer, Mich., and then worked at a suburban Chicago newspaper in Downers Grove, Ill., before moving to Arizona in 1997. She has also worked as a journalist at the Arizona Daily Star in Tucson and the Sedona Red Rock News in Sedona, Ariz.
Over her extensive journalistic career, Sparks has reported and written about K-12 education, as well as county, city and state government, locally-owned businesses, the U.S. Forest Service, crime, homeowners associations and health and fitness.
As a versatile public relations specialist, she previously worked in-house at Mitek Corporation, the parent company for MTX Audio and 12 other audio companies that sell products around the world. In a consulting role Sparks has helped professionals in the marketing, financial, publishing and restaurant businesses develop media relations campaigns, white papers and B2B documents.
Sparks is a member of the Society of Professional Journalists, as well as the Arizona Independents’ PR Alliance (azIPRA). She has a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Michigan State University.
